Synthetic glass, commonly known as acrylic, or plexiglass, is a kind of watch mirror material with soft texture and high plasticity. Most of the watches in the past used this material, and there are still many watches in use.
The advantage of this material is that it has very good elasticity and is not easy to break, so it is also called safety glass. The strength of plexiglass is relatively high, and its tensile and impact resistance is 7 to 18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a kind of plexiglass that has been specially heated and stretched, and nails are nailed into this plexiglass. Even if the nails penetrate, the plexiglass will not crack. Because of this characteristic, it is widely used in military machinery, such as the canopy on the aircraft, such as the windshield on the armored car, such as many of the earliest pocket watches.
The disadvantage of this material is that it scratches easily and is slightly less transparent.
Reason for selection:
Although it is easy to scratch, when it is scratched, one can ask the watchmaker to sand it directly on the glass to restore the original smooth mirror surface, so that the lens does not have to be replaced. If the scratches are too deep, you can also choose to replace the mirror directly, and the acrylic mirror is very cheap.
